I’m not going to sugar coat this. This news just ruined my day and it hurts me to share it with you, but I want to make sure that you are all aware that NARS IS NO LONGER CRUELTY FREE. They have changed their testing policy to include the dreaded, “except where required by law” clause and will be entering the Chinese market where animal testing on imported cosmetics is required by law. If you want more details about this, please check out Tashina from Logical Harmony’s post here. That is where I learned the news and she always does a spectacular job of explaining the details.
I want to encourage all of you to write to NARS (email customerservice@narscosmetics.com) and encourage them to reconsider their plans. Make sure to tell them you will no longer support the brand and they are losing you as a customer. I have already done this. Some of you may remember that this exact thing nearly happened with Urban Decay and the outcry from the cruelty free community was so strong that they abandoned their plans. We CAN make a change! It certainly doesn’t hurt to try. Below you will find what I personally wrote to NARS. Feel free to model your words after mine, copy and paste (though I would advise a few changes like your name 😉), or write something from your own heart. Honestly I feel like something personal is most effective, but whatever you choose to do, we NEED to make an effort to prevent this tragedy! You can call as well: 1-800-788-NARS from 8am-8pm EST Monday-Friday; 9am-6pm EST on Saturdays.
My letter to NARS:
My name is Christine and I am a cruelty free beauty blogger as well as a frequent customer. I have grown to respect NARS for its long-held stance against animal testing and resistance to entering the Chinese market. I am deeply saddened to learn that you have agreed to China’s animal testing requirements in order to expand into the Chinese market. You will not only be losing me as a customer, but so many other cruelty free beauty lovers who will now refuse to buy your products. I would like to encourage you to reconsider your entrance into the Chinese market and consider not only the animals that will be hurt on your behalf, but all of the customers who already know and love your line whose hearts are breaking right now. You will be losing a huge segment of an already familiar customer base. Please reconsider your decision and remain a cruelty free brand!
Thank you for your time and I hope you will take these words to heart.
