As a lot of you may know, I’ve been on an Accutane regimen for a little while now (I just found out I’m about to start my *hopefully* final month!). Accutane is infamous for the extreme skin dryness that everyone seems to experience while on the medication. To give an example, while I’m writing this, I’m on 7 day hair!!! 😳 Yup. It’s been an entire week without washing the not-even-remotely-greasy mop on my head which, I must say, is a positive side effect in my eyes. 😉 With that though, my face has certainly gone from combo / oily to definitely on the dry side. Given that, I have managed to avoid much of the flaky, itchy, tight or other such variations of actual discomfort from the drying effects of the Accutane…with the exception of my nose, which, to be fair, is usually a bit flaky. Since I’ve been using the same products pretty consistently, I feel like I can finally share my cruelty free “secrets” for managing super dry and sensitive skin that is also safe for using while taking Accutane.
As most of you probably know, I recently started taking Accutane in a last ditch effort to help my acne situation. If you’re familiar with Accutane, you know that it is known for drying out pretty much everyone’s skin. Knowing this, I came to the party prepared! I wanted to be using only skincare items that were best suited for dry, sensitive skin even before starting the medicine. I have found that there are 4 cleansers that I’ve been rotating between and I actually really enjoy them all! Perhaps best of all my skin, though it is drier, has yet to become flaky or uncomfortable! So, in an effort to share what little knowledge I may possess, I thought I would share my finds with you!
If you’ve read my recent posts or seen my (semi) recent InstaStories, you probably know that I’ve decided to take the drug Accutane / Roaccutane / Isotretinoin in hopes to defeat my acne. I know that this is a highly controversial and pretty serious drug with a lot of potentially dangerous side effects that should not be taken lightly. Honestly, this is kind of the last resort in this ill-fated 5 year struggle I’ve had with my skin. I have absolutely thought long and hard about it and I’ve just reached the point where nothing helps enough so I am willing to at least try the drug and see how I react to it. I have reached my breaking point if you will. This decision and impending change have been on my mind. A lot. It’s honestly difficult for me to focus on much else. It’s not all bad as I’m enthusiastically researching skin care for dry skin and squirreling away products like an expectant mother awaiting her firstborn child. I know that’s trivializing things a bit, but it keeps me optimistic about what could potentially be a dreadful “treatment” period. Anyway, I thought I would go through a bit about my skin care woes and how I came to this point. I do not want this blog to turn into all things Accutane all the time, but I would like to discuss it, perhaps as an additional post each week. We’ll see. I have a lot of thoughts about this so-called “journey” and how I can share the experience in ways that may help others facing the difficult decision of starting this extremely brutal drug. More on that in a sec. 😉 Let’s start with how I got to this point….
