One of my absolute favorite face masks is the Herbivore Blue Tansy AHA + BHA Resurfacing Clarity Mask. As the name suggests, it uses both AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) and BHA (Salicylic Acid) to gently but effectively exfoliate the skin while aiding with acne and congestion. For my problematic skin, it’s absolutely perfect! That said, I feel that anyone can benefit from this mask because it is really quite gentle and not skin-type specific.

The most obvious thing you’ll notice about this mask is that it’s kind of a murky blue-green color in the jar. The color is 100% from the Blue Tansy in it. Blue Tansy is a flower that is steam distilled to create an essential oil that can then be used for topical application. It is thought to help calm the skin by reducing inflammation. It also helps to reduce redness, so it’s great for those suffering with skin conditions such as rosacea or acne. Thanks to this wonder flower, you can also assault the skin with multiple fruit acids without leaving it feeling and looking angry!

Another thing you’ll notice about this mask if you read the ingredient deck is that it contains all natural and vegan ingredients! This is common to all Herbivore products. It would seem that every ingredient is an active part of the treatment itself – no fillers! For reference, here is the ingredient list:

Aloe Barbadensis (Organic Aloe) Leaf Juice, Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (plant derived), Glycerin, Tenacetum annuum (Blue Tansy) Leaf Oil, Jasminum Sambac (Jasmine Grandiflorum) Flower Oil, Natural Raspberry Melange, Carica Papaya (Organic Papaya) Fruit Extract, Carica Papaya (Organic Papaya) Leaf Extract, Ananas Comosus (Organic Pineapple) Fruit Extract, Salix Nigra (Willow) Bark Extract, Leucidal (radish root ferment)

The exfoliation comes solely from fruit acids. You may have noticed that from the ingredients. 🙂 The fruits used are naturally high in AHAs, which gently and effectively exfoliate the skin’s dead cells. The result is a fresher, clearer look and a softer texture. You skin is “resurfaced” to a healthier version of itself if you will. 😉

To further exfoliate the skin as well as aid with congestion by unclogging pores, Salycilic Acid enters the equation by way of the White Willow Bark. Another natural ingredient long used to gently and effectively help with acne. With the redness-reducing effect of the Blue Tansy, I find my skin is left looking clearer and more even in tone after each use!

Though the mask looks blue in the recycled glass jar, it is pretty much undetectable on the skin. There may be the slightest of tints, but I don’t really see it. The texture is that of a gel. It spreads easily over the face and rinses off with equally little effort. I tend to leave it on for about 20 minutes (as directed) and it’s not an unpleasant experience in any way. It doesn’t dry to a tight and uncomfortable crusty texture, but it also doesn’t stay so wet that it’s dripping off of your face. It feels pretty light and comfortable from application to removal. Though the directions say you may feel a bit of a tingling sensation, I haven’t experience this at all. Granted I assault my face with plenty of harsh things on a daily basis so it’s pretty much desensitized to tingly sensations. 🙂 It’s a pleasant mask to apply, wear and remove!

I forgot to mention the scent. It does have a noticeable scent, but I don’t find it to be unpleasant. It’s reminiscent of Tea Tree Oil, but not exactly the same. A bit milder and less sharp if that makes any sense. Though the scent is relatively strong, I find it kind of soothing. It also seems like it fades a bit as you wear the mask, but then I could just be getting used to it. 🙂 There is no added fragrance to the Blue Tansy Mask so everything you’re smelling is naturally occurring from the ingredients. I don’t think you’re likely to react due to the scent even if you’re sensitive to such things as it’s nothing artificial.

This is definitely a mask that I notice a difference from after just one use. My skin looks somehow happier. That may sound weird, but it’s the best word I can think of. It looks healthier, slightly clearer and more even in tone. It just looks better. With regular use (at times I will find myself using this as much as every other day without any issues), I feel as though my skin suffers from fewer and less intense breakouts. It keeps its healthier appearance throughout that time and it also feels healthier. It is more balanced – less excess oil and fewer dry patches – and softer. If I go for a while without reaching for this mask, I always wonder what made me stray once I start using it again. It’s a wonderful mask and well deserving of a spot among my favorites! 🙂

  1. This mask sounds lovely! I suffer from oily skin and I’m trying to find a more natural mask to replace my current favorite, will definitely be giving this one a try! xx

    • What’s your current favorite mask? The Herbivore is wonderful and I highly recommend it, but more recommendations are always fun ? Thanks for stopping by and commenting! ?
