We’ve all been there. You wake up late. You’re not going anywhere important. Basically you don’t really feel like going to the trouble of putting on makeup, but you still want to look at least somewhat pulled together. On days like these, I seem to have a very different set of go-to products than my “I feel like making the effort” days. It’s not necessarily fewer products, but rather a lighter look accomplished in less time. I thought I’d share what I use to feel a bit more polished on those days when just brushing your teeth feels like a chore. 😉
My first step is no different than a standard day. I grab for the Pixi Correction Concentrate in “Brightening Peach” to help cancel those under eye bags. Using my ring finger in a gentle patting motion, I dab this potted crème just on the darker, bluer areas under and in the inner corners of my eyes. Even though I’m going for a lighter look, I still need help covering up those dark circles!
I then move on to my “foundation.” Lately I’ve been reaching for the Urban Decay Naked Skin One & Done Hybrid Complexion Perfector. Technically you can use this as your moisturizer, sunscreen and foundation in one, but I use it in addition to a moisturizing sunscreen. As far as coverage, this stuff just manages to even out my skin tone but pretty much ignores blemishes. Still, it’s really quick and easy to apply with your fingers and it makes the skin look healthy. The finish looks natural, doesn’t emphasize texture, and creates that my-skin-but-better kind of illusion as it contains “light diffusing spheres.” Ordinarily I would feel like I need more coverage. However, this does even out the skin tone, and the concealer I use works wonders to cover any problem areas so I’m fine with it on a natural makeup day.
What is this wonder concealer you might ask? It’s just the loose powder Bare Minerals Concealer in “Bisque.” I actually love this stuff any day because it provides fantastic coverage that lasts. It’s also difficult to make this look cakey! I have a fair amount of trouble with mineral foundations looking cakey, including the original loose Bare Minerals Foundation, but this concealer is pretty much perfect! I am always shocked by just how much coverage this stuff has, but it’s fantastic for even the darkest of blemishes, making it a perfect marriage with the semi-sheer One & Done. 😀
Though the Bare Minerals loose concealer works wonders on the face, it’s not my favorite under the eyes. For that I prefer to go for a lighter covering liquid concealer, though there isn’t one that’s my current go-to. Though not lighter in coverage, lately I’ve been using the Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer, but applied a bit lighter. This stuff actually has fantastic coverage and I feel it’s a bit much with the lighter foundation, but I haven’t found a better alternative yet. I apply less than I would with heavier coverage bases, blend it out with a brush, and then pat it in with my fingertips so it’s as seamless as possible. It’s quick and easy even if it is a bit higher coverage than I would like!
To set everything, I use the RCMA No Color Powder. Nothing else will ever do! 😉 Not much to say here as I keep going on about how wonderful this powder is. It just looks natural while setting everything underneath and helping a bit with shine control. Moving on….
Ah brows! I feel like there are a few people out there who can get away without filling in their eyebrows, but I’m definitely not one of them. Since my brows are so sparse and light, I always fill them in with something. I find on “no makeup” days, I just fill them in a little lighter than normal or with a lighter color. Most recently I’ve been reaching for the ColourPop Brow Pencil in “Blondie.” It’s relatively quick and the color is light enough that I don’t look like I’ve painted on my eyebrows. Really any brow product you normally use should look great, but you may consider going a bit lighter to avoid overly done up brows on a pretty natural looking face. 🙂
Though not necessary, I almost always line my upper waterline with an eye liner. You could go with a brown for a more natural look, but I tend to just use my standard black Urban Decay 24/7 Waterline Eye Pencil in “Legend” because it stays put! It makes the lashes look a bit fuller and I find that it helps make my eyes stand out a bit better. I usually leave the lower lash line and water line bare, but occasionally I’ll add a hint of medium matte brown shadow on the lower lashes for a more balanced look to the eyes.
For mascara, I will usually go with something pretty natural and typically apply only one coat on just the upper lashes. I still choose black, but you could certainly go with a brown for an even more natural, yet still defined look. My mascara of choice lately is the Essence Plump No Clump Mascara. It defines and boosts my lashes enough that they’re noticeable, but not over the top. I also don’t have to worry about this mascara clumping, which no one wants when they’re trying to look pulled together without trying. 😉
For the cheeks, I tend to keep it minimal as well. Blushes tend to change depending on my mood, but usually it’s something neutral applied lightly. I rarely, if ever, bother with bronzer. Hell! I rarely bother with bronzer most days! 🙂 Something I do do is add a subtle highlighter. There is only one that I ever reach for and it is the Kevyn Aucoin The Celestial Powder in “Candlelight.” I always use this because it just looks so natural. It’s certainly an optional addition, but I feel like it finishes the face with a realistic and pretty glow.
Lastly we have lips. When I’m keeping the makeup as natural as possible, I usually want something as low-maintenance as possible while still adding a hint of color to my lips. I really like sheer lipstick formulas for days like these and my most reached for (that’s still available) is the sheer ColourPop Lippie Stix in “Juice Bar.” It’s just a perfect slightly brightening pink lip color that leaves enough of a stain behind that I don’t feel a constant urge to reapply. And it’s comfortable! A tinted lip balm would be great as well, but I don’t currently have one to recommend.
That’s it! Yes, I do realize that it’s a lot of products to apply when I’m going for a “lazy day no-makeup” look, but it’s still really quick and easy. I can usually cut the time it takes me in half. Maybe 10-15 minutes instead of 20-30! And I still feel like I look pulled together without being over the top or spending hours getting ready in the morning. More time to sleep in is always a good thing in my book! 😉 What kinds of things do you like to use on more natural days? Does it involves as many products as I bother with? I’d love to hear your tips and tricks in a comment! 🙂
