Honest Beauty has recently been added to Ulta’s arsenal of beauty goodies. Naturally I thought I should give some of the products a try. 😉 If you’re not familiar with Honest Beauty, it is the supposedly eco-friendly beauty extension of the The Honest Company, which was started by the actress Jessica Alba. Unfortunately, I have recently discovered that The Honest Company (I have not seen any issues with the Beauty arm) has been the subject of a decent amount of controversy, often questioning its claims of being all-natural and plant-based. I have not seen any disputes about its cruelty free status, but I understand that some are skeptical of the company. Putting all of that aside for now, Honest Beauty launched with a whopping 83-piece collection with 17 skin care items and 66 makeup products! Honest Beauty’s philosophy is that the most important thing is “effectiveness and safety” while being honest about what products don’t contain – phthalates, parabens, petrolatum, sulfates, and chemical sunscreens. The company aims to provide versatile products for all skin tones at a reasonable price. And, of course, they are cruelty free! Assuming all of that is in fact true, who wouldn’t want to support such a brand? 🙂 I’ve tried a few makeup items from the line and thought I would do a quick overview of my thoughts on each of them for you today. So without further ado, I bring you Honest Beauty!

I know this look unused and that’s because I’ve been using the same product and shade from the Everything Makeup Palette

If I had to pick a favorite product, I think I would go with the Crème Blush. I’m not usually a huge cream blush person, though as we’ve seen I seem to be having a moment with them lately! 😀 I thought this might not be very pigmented nor last very long, but I was mistaken! It has a very natural semi-sheer look on the skin, but the color is definitely buildable. It’s the kind of blush that doesn’t look like blush, but still adds color to the cheeks. It applies very evenly – I find applying it with a small stippling brush works best. It doesn’t feel sticky, tacky or oily on the skin either and it lasts! I was a bit concerned that it might not because it doesn’t seem like it really “sets,” but it’s definitely still around by the end of the day. I cannot feel it on my skin at any point in the day, which is fantastic because who actually wants to feel their makeup? 🙂 I have only tried the shade “Truly Thrilling,” but there are 6 to choose from all of which look quite pretty. I definintely recommend trying the Crème Blush when considering products from the Honest line!

A close second to the Crème Blush is the True Velvet Eyeliner. This is not your typical gel formula that gives you 5 seconds to smudge and then sets. These pencils don’t ever really set, but that’s what I like about them. They are very creamy and smudgeable, but even better, they retain their deep pigment even after smudging. It drives me nuts to smudge out a black liner and end up with a look that’s more grey than black, or one that looks patchy and uneven because you didn’t smudge fast enough. The “Truly Black” and “Truly Cocoa” seem to retain their color and blend so beautifully! They create a really nice soft and even gradient-like effect when smudged that is perfect on the lash lines. I haven’t tried the other four shades and honestly from swatching them in store, I’m not sure they have the same color-retention abilities, but the Black and the Cocoa are brilliant! Oh, and there is a good built-in smudger on one end for convenience as well! Obviously if you prefer eye liners that are completely budge-proof, these may not be for you, but I don’t find they travel all over my face or wear away throughout the day either. They’re just easier to smudge than their gel-formulated sisters. If you’re looking for an intense Black or Brown eye liner that can easily be smoked out or smudged into the lashline, the True Velvet Eyeliners are fantastic! 🙂

Sticking with the eyes, we have the Eyeshadows. I have only tried the five shadows available in the Everything Makeup Palette and I must say that I am impressed! The pigmentation is fantastic! Much better than most eco-friendly brands I have come across. In fact, take that out of the equation and they still hold their own with any good quality shadows out there! They are soft, but I don’t have trouble with fallout (I always tap my brush off before applying with any shadow). The pigmentation is great in the various finishes and they all blend like a dream! I imagine if you’re prone to over-blending, you might find that these can blend together a bit too easily, but I can’t say that I have actually experienced this problem. My only real issue with the Eyeshadows is that I’m not really drawn to all of the shades in any of the individual Trios available and therefore haven’t purchased any…yet! 😉 I feel like some of the shades that I would prefer to be shimmery are matte and some that I would rather be matte have shimmer. They look fantastic and the formula of the Trios seems every bit as good as the shades in the Everything Makeup Palette, I just can’t convince myself that the shade combos available will get much use from me. Despite that, whether you would rather check out the Everything Makeup Palette (which also includes the Crème Blush and two of their lip products) or the Eyeshadow Trios, I definitely recommend the formula of these eyeshadows!

Moving on to yet another winner, we have the Truly Kissable Lip Crayon – Sheer! I have the shade “Petal Kiss” and it is gorgeous! It is also incredibly pigmented for something marked “sheer!” 🙂 It has an almost gel-like creamy consistency that is so comfortable on the lips with a surprising amount of shine for a pencil lip product. Of course like most comfortable lip products, it doesn’t have the greatest lasting power, but it’s definitely an easy to apply on the go kind of product. It is as named – a chubby lip pencil. Just draw on and go! Super easy one-and-done lip color! Six seems to be a magic number for Honest Beauty because again there are six shades to choose from. If you want an easy all-in-one lip color with a glossy finish, the Truly Kissable Sheer Lip Crayons certainly fit the bill!

A subtly different lip product is the Truly Kissable Lip Crayon – Demi Matte. Not sure I agree with the Demi Matte claim here because these are still at least as glossy, if not more so than a traditional cream lipstick. They are more pigmented than the Sheer version, but they still have a relatively glossy finish. These are equally as comfortable as the Sheer version, but with the same average staying power. I tried the shade “Strawberry Kiss” which does have somewhat better lasting power just because it is a deeper shade. I actually returned it not so much because I didn’t like it, but because the color is a pretty standard strawberry red which I am already swimming in. Again, there are six shades available in the Demi Matte formula, but none really scream “You need me!” when I swatch them. So this wasn’t as big of a hit for me, but only for the colors. If you prefer a more opaque lip color that’s still incredibly comfortable and has a bit less shine than the Sheer version, I think you will love the Truly Kissable Lip Crayon – Demi Matte!

Last we have the Everything Primer. I tried this out because it looked and felt really nice on my hand, but I found that on my face I really didn’t notice much, if any, difference. My other problem is that there is kind of an odd scent to it that bothered me. It didn’t really last, but I did not enjoy applying it because of the scent. I think this might be a good primer for those with drier skins as it did seem hydrating. If you’re looking for it to minimize pores or eliminate shine, skip it! The claims include firming, plumping, pore minimizing, smoothing and illuminating. I didn’t notice much, if any, of any of these qualities after using this primer. Again, drier skins may have more success than I did, but honestly I would rather pick something like the Too Faced Hangover RX Primer. So we finally have a dud, at least for me, with the Everything Primer. 🙁

So there you have it! Pretty much everything I have tried from Honest Beauty’s makeup range has been great! The price point isn’t too bad either. Not quite “drugstore,” but a bit less than most Sephora brands. For a cruelty free eco-friendly line, that seems kind of rare. I definitely would like to try more from the brand and probably will over time. You can find Honest Beauty at Ulta (it’s in most stores too so you can see and touch everything!) as well as on the Honest Beauty site where there is an interesting “Bundle” option. I haven’t actually signed up for this yet, but am definitely considering it. You can choose any 3 products (skin care and/or makeup) for a flat rate of $50 with free shipping and returns! This would be a recurring shipment, though you can change your products, change your ship date and even pause or cancel the bundle at any time. Depending on what products you’re interested in trying, this is a fantastic savings! You can essentially get one item free depending on what you choose. You can also add up to 5 more products with each bundle at 25% off for even more savings! It certainly sounds like a great introduction to the brand for a reasonable cost that’s totally customizable! I should also point out the aforementioned Everything Makeup Palette which includes 5 shadows in a variety of finishes, a Crème Blush in “Truly Thrilling” and the Truly Kissable Lip Crayons – Demi Matte in “Mulberry Kiss” and “Honey Kiss” for $35. Definitely a great introduction to Honest Beauty…it’s where I began at least! 😉

love and stuff,

  1. It’s really a shame that there’s so much kerfuffle over THC right now, because it looks like this company really put the time and effort into creating lovely beauty products! Hopefully they’ll get everything straightened out soon.

That blush looks really interesting, I think my biggest hesitation with creme blushes has always been blendability but this sounds like it has a great formula!
